Bio

Tiny:
Soul-infused ska band from Indianapolis.

Short:
“I love that they don’t go after the standard ska influences…I hope The Circle City Deacons are the start of a new ska renaissance and resurgence.” – Barfly, NUVO

With two records under their belt and a third on the way, Indianapolis’s foremost soul-ska band The Circle City Deacons have never been grooving harder. Playing with the likes of legends Chris Murray, The Toasters, and The Slackers, The Deacons have earned their place in the Hoosier ska scene.

The band, led by organist and singer Craig Gorsline, has been gracing the Indianapolis music scene with innovative ska music since 2011. While some ska bands come and go, the Deacons have consistently delivered ska music reminiscent of Kingston nightclubs infused with southern soul and rock to the Circle City. The current lineup featuring Craig Gorsline at the helm on organ and vocals and the horn and rhythm sections layering harmonies instantly inspires crowds to move their feet or grab their lover.

Midwestern ska and soul fans alike know The Deacons will always get things rocking to start a killer show or bring it home at the end of the night. Whether you are looking for something to dance to or a tune to chill out, The Circle City Deacons are sure to use their mixture of soulful horn lines and reggae rhythms to take you to another place.

With two records under their belt and a third on the way, Indianapolis’s foremost soul-ska band The Circle City Deacons have never been grooving harder. Playing with the likes of legends Chris Murray and The Toasters, The Deacons have earned their place in the Hoosier ska scene.

The current lineup, featuring Craig Gorsline at the helm on organ and vocals, David Ragsdale on saxophone, Dan Oberg on aux percussion and vocals, Heath Schlatter on trumpet, and Clarence John Allen Jones on trombone among the traditional guitar by Pat Feeney, bass by Joey Moyer, and drums by Cristian Riquelme, instantly inspires crowds to move their feet or grab their lover.

This Naptown fixture brings their live show straight to your ears in their most recent record Welcome Home. The album blurs the lines between ska, soul, pop, and ballad as the horn section grooves along. It’s hard not to get up and dance when Gorsline’s soulful voice pulls you along to the music in “One Last Drag”, or when the harmonious vocals of “Stronger” cause you to close your eyes and sway with the music. Dance tune or earworm, this album has it all.

More classic songs from The Deacons such as “Small World” and “Lockerbie Blues” appear on their first record, Right With Time. Even with the years since the record, you can hear the roots of a new sound in ska music. Like the Green Room Rockers before them, The Circle City Deacons took on the Hoosier state alone and proud, willing to venture forth into a young but growing ska scene. They quickly became a go to act for those looking for new birth in a seasoned genre.

“While the Deacons have no reservations about acknowledging their influences, there is no doubt that they are pushing forward into a sound all their own.” – Nick Selm
